This Hasamiyaki Keepo Tumbler is a beautifully crafted piece of Japanese traditional pottery, made in Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture—a region known for over 400 years of ceramic history.
Each tumbler is created by combining two layers of ceramic clay—one for the inner surface and one for the outer. As ceramics shrink approximately 14% during firing, this dual-layer structure requires precise adjustments for each piece. Differences in thickness and shape between the two layers affect the shrinkage rate, making the process highly delicate and complex.
Temperature, humidity, and the hardness of the clay also influence the outcome, meaning artisans must constantly adjust their techniques, relying on years of experience and craftsmanship. The clay thickness is fine-tuned with sub-millimeter accuracy to ensure a perfect fit.
Due to the high level of precision required, many parts of the process are done using machines, but skilled artisans still play a critical role in overseeing quality and making adjustments where machines fall short. After countless trials and refinements, this tumbler was finally perfected for production.
