Officially adopted in 1974 as the successor to the Type 61 tank, the Type 74 became Japan's primary domestically developed main battle tank for decades. Designed to meet the unique geographical and defensive requirements of Japan, it combined mobility, firepower, and advanced suspension technology in a highly effective platform.
The Type 74 featured a powerful 105mm rifled gun mounted on a low-profile hull, improving concealment and battlefield survivability. One of its most distinctive characteristics was its hydropneumatic suspension system, which allowed the vehicle to adjust its posture and maintain stability on uneven terrain. This capability enabled effective hull-down and ridgeline firing positions in mountainous and hilly environments.
While the newer Type 90 tank was primarily deployed in Hokkaido, the Type 74 served throughout Japan, with a total of 873 vehicles entering service nationwide. After nearly five decades of operation, the Type 74 was gradually replaced by the Type 10 Main Battle Tank and Type 16 Maneuver Combat Vehicle, with the final vehicles retiring from service in March 2024.
