The Soryu-class marked a major technological advancement in Japanese submarine development. It was the first domestically produced Japanese submarine class equipped with an AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion) system, enabling extended underwater operations while maintaining a low acoustic signature.
Designed with stealth in mind, the submarine's hull and sail are covered with sound-absorbing materials to reduce detectability. The class also features a distinctive X-shaped stern rudder configuration, which improves underwater maneuverability while reducing the risk of damage compared to traditional control surfaces. Additional design elements, such as the hydrodynamic fillet mounted at the front of the sail, give the Soryu-class its unique appearance.
