Description

Kyoto Nishijin textiles originated in the 5th and 6th centuries and established their foundation in the 15th century, and are produced through more than 20 specialized processes.

This is one of the 46 pictures of "Fugaku Sanjurokkei" (Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji) — a Mt. Fuji Pictorial Collection published by Katsushika Hokusai between 1831 and 1834. It is widely known around the world, along with "Gai Fu Kaisei" and "Sanka Haku-u". The boldly gigantic waves are swirling and about to attack the small boat. Hokusai's unique conception is to capture this thrilling moment from the point of view of the people in the boat, just above the surface of the sea. Fuji in the distance is depicted in a leisurely manner, despite the rough sea. This "Fugaku Sanjurokkei 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa'" was woven with pure gold leaf, platinum leaf, and silk thread on a special loom that is four to nine times more delicate than ordinary Nishijin weaving.
