Choro - Handmade Japanese Copper Watering Can for Small Bonsai
Choro is a handmade copper bonsai watering can (joro) from Japan, made to pour like gentle rain and dew so that moss, soil and fertiliser stay exactly where they belong. It was developed for the growing number of people who keep small bonsai.
The Maker's Philosophy
The maker believes the ideal way for a watering can to water is to imitate rain. Just as rain was essential for life to appear on Earth, bonsai - a miniature world expressed on a tray - also need rain to be created for them artificially. Bonsai documents handed down from the Edo period record that rainwater was scattered using a ladle.
These watering cans work in the same way: like a ladle they scoop rainwater from a jar of stored water, then pass it through a built-in strainer that removes fallen leaves and fine debris. The result is watering that falls "like rain and dew" - it does not damage the bonsai's moss and does not wash away soil or fertiliser.
Designed With a Bonsai Artist
As demand for small bonsai grew, this watering can was created in response to customer requests and feedback, under the supervision of bonsai artist Kaori Yamada. It received an Encouragement Award at the 2014 TASK Monozukuri Contest.
Features
- Fine rain-like spray that protects moss and delicate surface planting.
- Strainer to keep leaves and debris out of the spout.
- Copper body that deepens in colour and character the longer it is used.
- Compact size suited to small bonsai and indoor plants.
Care and Handling
Empty the can after use and let it dry so water does not stand inside. Copper changes colour naturally over time; wipe with a soft dry cloth to keep the surface clean.
