The FFM-1 Mogami and FFM-2 Kumano were approved for construction under Japan's Fiscal Year 2018 defense budget and represent a new generation of multi-mission frigates. Designed with advanced stealth features, these vessels incorporate angled hull surfaces, concealed equipment placement, a distinctive unicorn-shaped integrated antenna system, and a pyramid-style mast equipped with four multifunction radar arrays, giving them a unique appearance unlike previous JMSDF destroyers and frigates.
