Mashiko ware is a traditional Japanese pottery from Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and is loved by people of all ages throughout Japan. The annual Mashiko Pottery Fair is one of the largest and most popular pottery events in Japan, attracting many pottery enthusiasts from across the country.
These accessories are created in collaboration with Otsuka Konai Shoten Orikoshi Kiln, one of the three most renowned kilns in Mashiko. The company has contributed greatly to the local pottery culture, including creating the iconic oversized Mashiko pottery jar displayed at Mashiko Station as a symbol of the region.
During the pottery-making process, some ceramic pieces such as plates, cups, and mugs may develop cracks, warping, or other imperfections and cannot be sold as regular products. Instead of discarding these beautiful ceramic fragments, Otsuka Konai Shoten carefully reuses them by breaking them into suitable sizes, then individually shaping and polishing each piece by hand to create warm and charming accessories.
Although each ceramic shard is small, every piece features beautiful colors and the unique texture of Mashiko pottery. Since every item is handmade from naturally different ceramic fragments, each accessory is a one-of-a-kind creation.
