A Bag to Cherish, with the Natural Fragrance of Wood
This unique attaché bag, called “Élan,” is handcrafted by skilled artisans from Japan. The wooden body is made from Hinoki cypress, a highly valued Japanese wood known for its refreshing aroma and natural antibacterial properties. Instead of being coated with paint, the Hinoki wood is carefully polished by hand to highlight its pure texture and scent.
The handle and straps are crafted from premium cowhide leather (vegetable-tanned leather). Over time, the leather gradually changes to a warm amber tone, allowing you to enjoy the natural process of aging (known as “patina”).
This product is made-to-order and represents the collaboration of traditional woodworking in Shizuoka and fine leather craftsmanship in Nagano, Japan.

About us
Woodcraft Kobayashi is based in Shizuoka City, Japan, and specializes in furniture and interior design using Okushizu Hinoki, a type of Japanese cypress grown in the mountains of Shizuoka. The founder began working with Hinoki over 20 years ago after crafting a table from driftwood found in a nearby river. Since then, the workshop has dedicated itself to using local, sustainable wood—including thinned timber from forest management.
Hinoki has been revered in Japan since ancient times as a “sacred wood” often used in shrines and temples. For this reason, Kobayashi finishes Hinoki products without paint or varnish, relying solely on careful polishing to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Their philosophy is to create bags and furniture that allow you to enjoy the touch, fragrance, and natural transformation of Hinoki as it ages.
