Modern Classic: Japanese Selvedge Denim High Rise Jeans

Made-in-Japan women's selvedge denim jeans in 12.5oz American cotton, with a high rise and relaxed straight leg inspired by 1950s Hollywood style, faithful 1940s vintage details and the original re.birth wash.

A 1950s Silhouette, Modernized

In the 1950s the first jeans made for women arrived on the Hollywood screen: a button fly, a high rise and a relaxed, wide straight leg. Modern Classic is based on that silhouette but evolved with up-to-date pattern making, giving a beautiful, non-constricting fit around the hips.

Vintage Details

The details faithfully reproduce 1940s vintage features: selvedge (red line) outseams, hidden rivets on the back pockets, and a back strap for waist adjustment - while the fly is updated to a zipper so it will not damage your nails. The jeans are packed with meticulous details, including pure silver-plated buttons and punched copper rivets.

12.5oz Selvedge Denim Fabric

The material is 12.5oz selvedge (red line) denim made from American cotton and woven on old-fashioned shuttle looms - a globally recognized premium material. It is slightly lighter in weight with a hint of stretch, so it combines the heavy look of vintage denim with lightness and easy wear.

The re.birth Wash

These jeans have a crisp, unwashed rigid face with no fuzzing, but they have in fact been through an original washing process named re.birth. Rigid denim is appealing for its clean look, yet it shrinks significantly in home washing - so you normally have to buy a size up - and bleeds colour so strongly that your hands turn blue from the indigo dye. The re.birth wash rinses the denim once, then starches it again with a non-water-soluble starch to return it to an unwashed appearance. This lets you choose your true size from the start, reduces colour transfer, minimizes fuzzing after washing, and keeps the rigid face far longer.

Made in Japan

Modern Classic is not just a replica; it is a pair of jeans where the character of good old vintage and the latest technology coexist. The fabric is woven in Hiroshima Prefecture, while sewing and washing are carried out in Miyagi Prefecture. Japanese jeans made in Okayama are world-famous, but the first jeans sewn in Japan are said to have been made by Watanabe Sewing in Gunma Prefecture. Watanabe Sewing relocated to Miyagi Prefecture in the 1970s and the factory still operates there today. Though not widely known, Miyagi has the second-largest number of jeans factories in Japan after Okayama.
