Tradition+Modernity: Traditional techniques are brought into the present day as a "symphony" of healing light and shadow play. Traditional Japanese kimono patterns (created using Ise katagami stencils) are reproduced in detail in this lampshade to create a standing lantern that soothes you with its diffuse light and Japanese aromas (like incense).

Kimono fabric uses ancient Japanese patterns and motifs. These patterns have been used here for a lantern that is adapted to modern lifestyles to provide a time for tranquility and peace of mind.
Luxuriate in a space of Japanese light and scent while experiencing Japanese traditions.

Light source stand: acrylic; light source frame: wood (plug)
In 2019, this project was selected as part of the Challenge Local Cool Japan in Paris organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and exhibited at Maison wa in Paris in April of that year.
In 2019 and 2020, it was awarded two years running in the TAKUMI NEXT 2019 & 2020 (a selection of Japan's best 100 items), organized by JETRO, an independent administrative agency of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry

Our Story

Ise katagami stencils have been passed down since Japan's Muromachi Period (1333-1573 CE). This lantern takes those motifs and reimagines them in the form of a light fixture. Seeking to pair these motifs with the modern lifestyle, we developed a product for a global audience that imparts tranquility and peace of mind to the user. Ise katagami stencils have been traditionally used to dye kimono fabric with classical Japanese patterns and motifs. We took this traditional design and craft and repurposed it as a lampshade, pairing it with the latest refinements in electronics to create a fantastic space that soothes you.

Supports two 2 power sources ---- Household power supply (dedicated AC adapter), x 3 AA batteries
Usage conditions: Indoor use (not usable outdoors)

*This is a precision electronic device, so it is vulnerable to external pressure/impact (can cause structural deformation, poor performance)

Traditional techniques become "healing light," a symphony of light and shadow, to the present day.

Traditional crafts are scattered throughout Japan. These are traditional cultures with many wonderful ancient designs and techniques.
We have transformed these traditional designs into lampshades and are introducing products to the world that create fantastic and soothing light spaces.
